In 2023, Vietnam’s cashew nut exports demonstrated resilience, reaching a total turnover of USD 3.63 billion with a production volume of 641,000 tons. This represented a remarkable 17% increase in value and over 23% in volume compared to the previous year.
According to the General Department of Customs, December 2023 saw Vietnam exporting 63,000 tons of cashew nuts valued at USD 343 million, marking a substantial 34% increase in quantity and a 27.5% increase in value compared to December 2022. The entire year’s performance reinforced Vietnam’s stronghold, maintaining its position as the world’s leading exporter, capturing 80% of global production for 16 consecutive years.
The product structure reveals that Vietnam predominantly exported W320, W240, and W180 cashew nut varieties, comprising 63.51% of the total volume and 69.84% of the country’s overall cashew nut export turnover.
The Vietnam Cashew Association reported that in 2023, the United States emerged as the largest market for Vietnamese cashew nut exports, accounting for nearly 25% of the total export turnover. Specifically, cashew nut exports to the U.S. reached USD 885 million, marking a 5% increase compared to 2022.
China witnessed a breakthrough in cashew nut imports from Vietnam, recording a turnover of USD 683 million in 2023. This represented a significant 55% increase compared to 2022, constituting 19% of Vietnam’s total cashew nut export turnover. Notably, China surpassed the U.S. to become the largest importer of Vietnamese cashews.
Other notable markets included the Netherlands, with cashew nut exports reaching USD 353 million in 2023, showing a 19% increase from 2022, constituting 10% of the country’s total cashew nut export turnover. Positive results were also observed in exports to potential markets such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.
In 2023, cashew nut exports to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia surged by 46.6% and 40.1%, respectively, compared to the previous year. The UAE experienced an outstanding increase of 148.7%. Despite falling short of the set targets for 2023, the cashew export industry exceeded mid-year projections, affirming its resilience in the face of fluctuations.
Looking ahead to 2024, despite challenges in the global economy, Vietnam remains optimistic about positive developments. Experts emphasize the need for the cashew industry to focus on processing quality and diversifying products to enhance competitiveness, especially in the wake of increasing competition from countries like Ivory Coast, known for its raw cashew materials.
